Work expands to fill the time available for its completion. If you’re into productivity, you’ll know this proverb as Parkinson’s Law. This interesting statement was made by Cyril Northcote Parkinson, the famous British historian and author, in 1955.

Parkinson’s Law – work expands to fill the time available for its completion – means that if you give yourself a week to complete a two hour task, then (psychologically speaking) the task will increase in complexity and become more daunting so as to fill that week.

It may not even fill the extra time with more work, but just stress and tension about having to get it done. By assigning the right amount of time to a task, we gain back more time and the task will reduce in complexity to its natural state.

Parkinson’s Law is an observation, not some voodoo magic. It works because people give tasks longer than they really need. 

 

Here are some tips to help you use Parkinson's Law to your advantage since we know how it works now: 

  • Work without your computer charger. 
  • Use the Pomodoro technique.
  • Restrict your time artificially by moving  your location throughout the day. Create a task list to get done at each spot.
  • Make a rule to do XYZ before 9am. Get it done early and then let yourself have some freedom.
  • Get an accountability partner who will force you to pay up, literally, if you work past a certain time or take too long to do something - create a financial consequence. 
  • Set a hard deadline.
  • Cut your deadlines in half. 
  • Limit tasks like responding to email to thirty minutes a day - set a timer.

Becky Straw is the Co-Founder and Chief Adventurist for The Adventure Project, a new nonprofit “adding venture” capital to support entrepreneurs in developing countries. Her and her co-founder were inspired by a passion to revolutionize giving, and create a movement to marry good intentions with measurable impact. Becky was 29-years-old when they launched.

In their first four years, The Adventure Project has engaged 6,000 Americans to help create 894 jobs in India, Kenya, Uganda and Haiti. Those entrepreneurs will go on to serve over one million people to better health care, food and water. Their goal is to create one million jobs in the next ten years.

Your business is an extension of you, so while it IS separate, there will always be some ways that you're reflected in it.

It will always reflect your strengths and weaknesses. 

It will always reflect your personality. 

And most importantly, your business will always reflect your personal core values. 

They are the foundation and framework that your business is built on.

 

When you intentionally develop your core values, they increase your speed for decision making, help you avoid costly mistakes, reduce stress, and allow you to stay true to yourself and your customers.

The business will always reflect what you care about. So what are your core values? 

Here are a few of mine as an example:

✔️ Authenticity: I always want my community to know I am being real with them. This means I don't only share the good stuff, I share it all. I want them to have the whole story and see even the ugly parts of my business and my life. 

✔️ Relatability: I always want people to connect with my message and say “Oh wow, me too!” I want them to feel like we are in this together in our struggles and experiences. 

✔️ Humor: I’ve got a naturally sarcastic and playful sense of humor in my everyday life. I want to use this to entertain and engage people and also lighten the mood so that they can hear the hard truth sometimes. 

I always tell my clients we need to lighten up and have some fun because believe it or not, we're not creating oxygen. 

✔️ Approachability: Regardless of how big my network and community eventually becomes, I always want to be approachable, this is one reason I have my dog in my branding, that's part of who I am and I know it makes me look and feel more approachable. 

✔️ Generosity: I am a giver to the core and my business is no exception. I want generosity to shine through everything I do, and I also want to influence others to be generous as well. With our time, money and energy. 

I have a few more that I won't go into major detail on, but they are things like: integrity, personal responsibility, challenge, encouragement, etc.

By being clear on my core values, I can make decisions for my business and for the future that align with these (and other) values. 

Even as my life changes and my business evolves, knowing my core values for my business allows me to stay true to myself.

Most business owners know that in order to be successful, they’ve got to set goals.  But despite this, many business owners don’t actually do it.

Of the business owners that do set them, just like New Year’s resolutions, most don’t follow through.

There’s a whole load of reasons why you don't achieve your goals, typically they are excuses.

 

When you set big goals, many people feel a sense of overwhelm. Rather like standing at the bottom of a huge mountain, the size of the goal before you, just like the mountain, appears to be enormous.

Instead, let's use 90 day goals to eat the elephant one bite at a time. 

 

If you break a task or goal into smaller chunks, it’s a lot easier to achieve.

Consequently, the most successful way for you to achieve a big goal is rather than creating a plan to tackle your goals for the year, is instead to focus on your goals for the next 90 days.

So, having a goal for the year is great, but being really clear what you’re going to achieve in the next 90 days towards that big goal, makes it much more likely that you’ll achieve it.

What’s more, having a smaller goal over a shorter period makes it much easier to get everybody to move forward at the same time.

Why 90 Day Goals Are Better Than Year Long Ones:

- 90 Day’s isn’t too long

- 90 Day’s isn’t too short either

- Parkinsons Law - work expands to fill the time available for its completion means that if you give yourself a week to complete a two hour task. 

- Helps motivate you - you're more likely to stay motivated when you have WINS

- You can reset them quickly

- You aren’t tempted to spread yourself too thinly by trying to achieve too much

Tips To Achieve Your 90 Day Goals:

1. Write them down - 42% more likely to achieve them

2. Keep them visible

With Apple's new iPhone 6s iteration just being released, it was essential that I talk about all the things that Apple does right that we can learn from as entrepreneurs and marketers.

The only thing that’s changed - is everything. 

1. Continuous Improvement 

Create a minimum viable product! 

By constantly improving what you offer and developing new, high value products and services, you provide a compelling reason for:

•Existing clients or customers to keep buying from you and recommending you to their friends.

•New clients or customers to be attracted to your products or services.

2. Communicate in the Language of Your Audience

It makes no sense to talk about things like megabytes, gigahertz, and processing power to customers that simply don’t care about technical jargon.

Take a look at any Apple product page and you’ll find that though they do discuss product specifications and technical information, it’s hidden behind the benefits that their audience is truly after.

Instead of display resolution, you’ll see phrases like “edge to edge glass,” “retina display,” and “LED backlighting.”

Sure, the jargon is there for those that need it, but it’s presented in a way that makes you want to learn about megapixels, rather than shy away from them. The art is in the copy, not in the features.

3. Build a Tribe

Apple listens to their people. In fact, they also predict what their people will want before anyone even thinks to dream it up.

It’s no secret that Apple has built one of the most hardcore fan bases of any product and of any time. There’s a reason they’re called “fanboys.”

They know that they serve an elite audience, and rather than back away from that fact, they embrace it, they nurture it.

4. Be Simple

We know that web users prefer scannable, skimmable content. Research shows that only 16% of website visitors read every word on a page, and 79% of web users reported they simply scan the page. 

To streamline and simplify your marketing copy, think about what your customers actually need to know, and get rid of the rest. Some questions to ask yourself:

What is our most compelling value proposition?

What are the most significant benefits of our product to consumers?

What is the minimum amount of information we can provide to our website visitors to help them make a decision?

How can we present this information in a simple way?

The primary goal of your website or ad copy should be to simplify the decision making process for your customers.

The Law of Action is one of the most overlooked of the Universal Laws, stating that you must take action to get what you desire.

When I say it is the most overlooked I mean in all the books and audios about the Universal laws and the Law of Attraction, they all seem to talk about visualizations and positive thinking, not that thats bad, but few talk about the fact that you must also take ACTION on these thoughts and feelings. 

You can not bring what you want into being, without taking action. Yes, the positive thoughts are important. Everything first starts as a thought in your mind. 

But, without action, these are merely daydreams. Action along with positive intention is what brings your dreams to life. 

Today we're talking all about the 2 main steps to manifest your desires.

1. Know what you want - have a strong desire to actualize it, believe that it's possible, and have a high level of expectation that it will happen.

Many people struggle with money, that's why we talk about it a lot. They yearn for the stability that it provides, but aren’t sure how to go about finding it. Barbara Stanny's book, Secrets of Six Figure Women, profiles six figure earners - who were serial underearners until they changed their mindset – often because something drastic happened (e.g. a divorce, bankruptcy, etc).

Stanny goes on outline the key traits of under earners, and since we talked to Barbara yesterday I thought it would be useful to share her insights here to start a discussion about an often-taboo topic – money. How much we’re making, or how little we’re making, and why.

But first: What is a serial underearner? According to Stanny:

“to repeatedly gain less income than you need, or than would be beneficial, usually for no apparent reason and despite your desire to do otherwise.” Simply put, an underearner is anyone who earns below her potential.

Underearners aren’t all poorly paid, however. You can make six figures and still fall into this under earner category. What distinguishes an underearner is that she/he should bring in more, and genuinely wants to, but for whatever reason, doesn’t… It’s estimated that one out of every three workers is an underearner, most of them women.

Stanny goes on to outline the characteristics of the typical underearner:

Underearners have a high tolerance for low pay.

Underearners are willing to work for free.

Underearners are lousy negotiators.

Underearners practice reverse snobbery.

Underearners believe in the nobility of poverty.

Underearners are subtle self-saboteurs.

Underearners are unequivocally codependent.

Underearners live in financial chaos.
