The School of Self-Mastery podcast is all about business, money and life. I talk with guests who have created a RICH life for themselves, not because they’re bathing in money, (although they may be doing that too) but because they’ve defined and created success on their own terms, through their own personal successful habits. Sometimes you just don't feel like it, right?! So what's a human to do? Watch netflix instead? Power through and man up?

When we only take action when we feel like it, we don't typically get the results that we want. In this episode, I'll share with you what to do instead.

When you just don't FEEL like doing it now, I want you to act from a place of how you will FEEL when it's completed. If you want the feeling you'll receive when the thing or task is completed, then you need to go ahead and do it. Act based on how you want to feel in future tense, not how you feel now in present tense.

Reina Pomeroy is the founder of Reina + Co, the life + biz success coaching practice for creatives who are right brained and heart centered. She helps women who have a million brilliant ideas in their heads that they can’t seem to make happen. She helps them to stop spinning their wheels and take action on what’s most important so they can become the go-to expert in their field.

Reina has her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Master's degree in Social Work and is a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach from the Coach Training Institute and the International Coaching Federation. She’s a candy connoisseur and could tell you what each flavor of Jelly Belly is in a container. Currently she lives in a suburb of Washington, DC with her almost 2 year old son, puppy and Marine husband.

Reina shares her unique take on marketing, called the “Social Glue Method” to which she attributes any of her internet credibility to.

Using this method and without a list,

  • Reina sold out a group program within 2 months of launching her website

  • Started her 1:1 coaching waitlist within 8 months of starting her business

  • Before Reina + Co hit their one year anniversary, founder, Reina, was asked to speak at 3 “top of industry” conferences that her ideal clients attend.

In the facebook group threads where people are obsessed about increasing their sales, being pitchy and inauthentic, Reina found an opportunity to find her people, grow her audience and explode her credibility. In a sea of constant self-promoters, Reina helps women entrepreneurs cultivate their voice for what makes them unique and how to gain the following they desire to get.

In this episode, Reina is sharing what the Social Glue Method actually is, why you don’t need a huge list; You don’t need a huge audience; You don’t need to spend a ton of money to get yourself out there; BUT that You DO have to care about people; You DO have to want to nurture relationships; You DO have to give something of yourself.

Jack Canfield and I have a lot in common, one of those things being...we understand the challenges of alcoholism. When I heard about Jack's new book, The 30 Day Sobriety Solution, I knew we had to talk about it on The School of Self-Mastery.

Jack Canfield is the beloved originator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul® series, and he fostered the emergence of inspirational anthologies as a genre - and watched it grow to a billion dollar market. As the driving force behind the development and delivery of more than 123 million books sold through the Chicken Soup for the Soul® franchise (and over 500 million copies in print worldwide), Jack Canfield is uniquely qualified to talk about success.

He’s America's leading expert in creating peak performance for entrepreneurs, corporate leaders, managers, sales professionals, corporate employees, and educators and is affectionately known as "America's #1 Success Coach," . Jack has studied and reported on what makes successful people different. He knows what motivates them, what drives them, and what inspires them. He brings this critical insight to countless audiences internationally---sharing his success strategies in the media, with companies, universities and professional associations.

Jack is a Harvard graduate with a Master's Degree in psychological education and one of the earliest champions of peak-performance, developing specific methodologies and results-oriented activities to help people take on greater challenges and produce breakthrough results.

His proven formula for success reached global acclaim with his most recent National Bestseller, The Success Principles: How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be. But that’s not the book we’re going to be talking about in today’s episode…nope, today we’re talking about something much more personal for both me and Jack, sobriety.

Want to know why Jack decided to write the 30 Day Sobriety Solution? Me too. And how you can apply these principles to anything you may be addicted to...including your business.

Here's where you can get a copy of The 30 Day Sobriety Solution.

Wedding planning can be complicated, stressful and overwhelming...or it can be relaxed, enjoyable, full of love and imperfectionism.

That's what today's story is about...all my imperfectionism as I sent out my email wedding invitations. I realized we only had 80 days left until we said "I do" and figured I should probably officially invite some people.

So, naturally, I whipped up a wedding invitation via Greenvelope.com in 20 minutes flat...and hit send in between House of Cards episodes.

I wasn't always this way...I've previously suffered with something pretty common that you may be experiencing in your life and business as well...perfectionism.

I'm not a full-blown imperfectionist. Loud and proud baby.

Because honestly, if someone doesn't want to come to my wedding because the invite colors don't match the flowers...or because there won't be flowers...then I don't need them there anyway.

Maybe perfectionism plagues you too, but I want to challenge you in this episode to figure out ONE PLACE in your life and business that you can be more of an #imperfectionist for just a moment!

And when you do...let me know over here in my FB community!

Jessi Honard is a self-proclaimed word nerd and serial entrepreneur with a passion for helping entrepreneurs take ownership of their stories. Always a writer, she graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in English after just two and a half years. At the age of 21, she took a job teaching high school English and went on to earn her Masters in Education. In 2010, burnt out from the constant demands of public education, she took her love of writing and teaching into the world of entrepreneurship. Since then, she has written extensive copy for major universities and non-profit organizations, as well as highly motivated, strategic solopreneurs.

A firm believer in the power of words, Jessi developed the Copywriting Character quiz as a new way of building quality connections through writing. The quiz gives entrepreneurs the tools they need to lay the foundation of their own writing and, as a result, grow their business on a more profound and long-lasting level.

Today we're going to discuss:

  • The importance of building a quality audience over playing a numbers game (100 raving fans is much better than 1,000 subscribers who are ‘meh’), and doing so through consistency in your voice & style across platforms (something the Copy Character quiz helps with).
  • The biggest user error: Spending thousands of dollars on branding/web design and not following through with your day-to-day copy.
  • Spending far too much time focusing on the ideal client avatar (to obsessive detail) instead of honing your positioning and the benefits you offer.

There are many parallels between the way I run my business and the way I run my athletic life, and here's another one.

Crossfit is one of my guilty pleasures...I used to be one of those people that were annoyed by crazy Crossfit humans...calm down people, it's just a workout.

That was until I moved down to Florida and started Crossfitting. It was like I found the part of triathlon that I loved so much {the racing} except I got to do it everyday. And as an added bonus, I had found my people too.

This past weekend, at the end of our partner WOD {workout of the day -- done with a partner on Saturdays}, I saw that there was still a partner group struggling through the workout long after everyone else had finished. They were hot, exhausted, and ready to quit.

And then something magical happened that doesn't happen in many places...everyone selflessly walked over and started supporting them, cheering them on, and genuinely not allowing them to do anything less than their best in that moment.

And I thought to myself, "why don't people run their businesses this way?" Self-included because I will be the first to tell you that I'm not perfect at this either, but if we can acknowledge where we can do better, that's the first step to making it happen.

In this episode I'll be sharing the 6 things you can start doing in your business to show up more like the humans in my Crossfit class.

Today is officially ONE FULL YEAR of entrepreneurship for me, and I wanted to celebrate by reflecting on my biggest lessons and learnings here for you, as well as giving away a FREE coaching/strategy session over in my FREE community.

So, here we go!

-- I didn’t need to make what I made in corporate to leave {so if you’re out there now and feeling like you need to match it -- revisit that} I needed to make my expenses {super small after I paid off my debt} which I was already earning more than that, but it gave me peace of mind to leave faster.

-- Be consistent, take action, show up regardless of how you feel. Doing things only when you FEEL like it won’t turn you into the Visionary CEO that you want to be.

-- Boundaries are important...learn to have them.

-- Not everything will be a winner -- that’s okay, learn from it, tweak it, and try again - resiliency is key {live event, programs launched}  BUT you’ll never know if you don’t try it!

-- You can’t do this alone if you want to go bigger. Growing a team is hard because you have to let go of control, admit you’re not the best at everything, lead people effectively -- but it is soooo worth it. HIRE THE BEST. Don’t nickel and dime yourself with anything less than an A team. It will bite you later. Pay your team first, pay yourself once your business is more sustainable.

-- Taking risks is necessary. You won’t always be comfortable, no one likes to risk money, but everyone likes to make it. You have to be someone who is willing to take risks to create bigger and faster success. {I am so not averse to risk because I know the worst that happens is that I’ll go do something else if this flops}

-- There aren’t really any emergencies -- so be calm, be someone you’d want to work for and with, take time for you, don’t panic {it’s annoying} --- we’re not creating oxygen here, seriously.

-- Managing your money is important. I’ve been able to run my business fully debt free. After getting out of a ton of debt last year, I never wanted my business to run off debt, but I worked my tail off to generate cash flow, only invested with cash {but still made stretchy investments -- hey, no one likes handing over large chunks of money no matter how much you have} but knowing WHERE you need to invest is key.

-- Don’t be afraid to hear no. I heard a lot of No’s over the past year, but most people don’t realize that because I also got a lot of YES’s. {just think, JLD said no to me before he said yes.} be persistent, take constructive criticism, improve and ask again!

-- Building relationships is first and foremost for both connecting with peers, mentors, influencers and clients. Don’t ask for things from people you don’t know, build relationships with them and genuinely serve them FIRST, you’ll be much more successful that way, but you need to be thinking long term!

-- You don’t need to have a huge list to make a big impact, you need to have an engaged list of people who know like and trust you. Treat them like people, engage with them, build connections and you will impact and serve them better.

-- Whatever you want is attainable, just focus, think bigger, take action and get the support you need.  I never could have imagined what I’d create in just 1 year, which shows me the next year and so on is going to be even bigger and more impactful for others.

This is where most people fall short when it comes to selling or pre-validating any offer -- they give up. They only offer it up once, or think it's inappropriate or 'salesy' to ask again.

But the truth is, most people probably didn't even hear you or see you the first time you offered the thing, others weren't quite sure what you offered, and the other handful needed to know, like, trust you a little more before they said yes.

So, how many time IS it necessary to follow up after offering the sale? How much are you leaving on the table by NOT following up enough? And what exactly is 'enough'?

That's what I'll share EXACTLY in this episode!

You didn't ask them. You didn't listen. You didn't make sure it was exactly what they wanted or needed to get them the results they want.

In episode 165 I shared exactly WHY you need to prevalidate everything you do, and in this episode I'm going to talk about all the different ways you can start doing that!

Zach Spuckler teaches online business owners how to get seen, be heard and become profitable leveraging Periscope and Facebook. In his first year of business he leveraged periscope to create $160,000 in revenue and has continued to see growth with the platform.

No other platform has grown as fast as Periscope and it's naive to think that live streaming and live video isn't going to become and relevant to business as Facebook . If you don't get in now, you're throwing away BIG opportunity.

In this episode, Zach and I discuss:

- how to leverage livestreaming for Leads

- how to get followers

- how to get confident being live on air

- a basic scope outline to help you get started

- how to prevalidate all of your ideas via livestream

You have to believe that your work is actually saving them, solving a problem for them, rescue them. If you’re not really sure what it is that you’re rescuing them from, it’s going to be very challenging to sell it.

Which is why you need to understand what it is you do and who you do it for.

Start small and go rescue people from their problems. That's what we'll be talking more specifically about in this episode.

Most people don’t get clients because they’re unwilling to do the hard {and potentially scary} work of reaching out and offering themselves as a solution.

I want you to literally think of yourself on the search and rescue team. When we’re in trouble, lost, stuck, in pain...we want to be rescued.

This episode is all about getting out there and rescuing some humans.

Being willing to start small and build from there is super important.

You need to be confident and comfortable with your pricing, always being sure you’re over-delivering and not over-charging. This is going to set you up for long-term, sustainable success versus just making some quick and easy cash by overcharging right out the gate.

Note: this has nothing to do with your self-worth. If you’re confused about this difference between charging for the value you provide and charging based on your worth -- listen to this episode.

→ work for free.

If you’re not confident with charging anything yet, or unsure if you can even get people results, I’d encourage you to do some FREE work first.

Test out your solution with 3 people for free to get you feeling more confident and clear. Doing this free work has ALWAYS turned into paid clients as well, so while it may seem counterintuitive, doing free work will get you paid clients.

→ be bold, be proactive.

Some parts of business are a numbers game. I want you to get out there and collect no’s.

You’re probably over there thinking... “Why would I collect no’s Adrienne? I want to collect YES’s!”

Of course I want you to collect YES’S, but when you put tons of pressure on yourself to do that, you can easily get discouraged and you’re creating too much attachment to the outcome of each individual interaction. I want you to understand that no’s don’t mean stop, they mean go ask more people.

By following the search and rescue plan you WILL get your first 3 clients, probably more. But the main goal isn’t to make tons of money, although you might do that too...the main goal is to get more feedback.

Because the more feedback you get, the better and easier things will become.

You’ll be figuring out if your product/service is something people want/need {pre-validate this thing}, discovering if you even like doing this {sometimes things are sexier in theory}, and if you’re effectively communicating the value through your pitch.

Each time you talk to someone you’ll uncover more feedback about how to make this business even better. And believe me, you want to do this NOW...not after you create the marketing plan, design the website and waste tons of money.

The search and rescue plan is a simple way for you to get quick feedback, make money, and validate your business. By getting these 3 paying clients, you’re going to gain tons of clarity, confidence, and momentum to move this business forward.

The third step of the Search & Rescue plan is all about the MATH -- you can get full access to the entire 3 part Search & Rescue plan with a complete breakdown of the math here, FOR FREE.

The Search Plan!

Who is your ideal client? Where would they be going to look for a solution to their problems? Are they googling it? Asking their friends? Reading books? Searching on craigslist?

Where are these humans already looking for solutions to their problems? And how can you create the solution to their problem through your services?

Most people spend way too much time overthinking how to get their first clients, when there are likely people within your network that either 1. Need your services or 2. Know someone who needs your services.

In this episode we'll cover exactly how to FIND those people who need you.

When you select a business model you want to make sure it fits with your ideal day as well.

Start with your ideal day.

Describe your ideal day – all of it. Get super specific and imagine this day with all five senses - what you're feeling, tasting, smelling, touching, and seeing as you go through your day. Take note and be mindful of your desired feelings.

Get specific about what you’re actually doing. Think about the conversations you’re having, the actions you’re taking, and the things you’re creating. Remember, this is a fantasy ideal day – it’s your story to write and can be as improbable as you can imagine.

Your business model selection is what determines what your income and your days will actually look like, but most people breeze right through this and don't take the time to understand how their business model and their ideal day match up.

In this episode, I'll share the 5 most common types of online business models and some pros and cons associated with each so you can decide how your ideal would fit into each option. Do NOT skip this step of business foundations, as building a business around the wrong business model will burn you out!

Types of Online Business Models

  • Service Based Business {Coaching, Consulting, Web Design, Graphic Design, & Copywriting, etc.}
  • Digital Products / SaaS {Software as a Service}
  • Product Based Business {ecommerce}
  • Blogging {Advertising & Affiliate Sales}
  • 3rd Party Sales {Amazon, Ebay, Etsy}

* note this isn't an exhaustive list, but it's a great list to start with

Alex is the author of the book MASTER THE DAY, which is based on the success habits behind people that lost over 100+ pounds in a healthy way, and kept it off, and the founder of Modern Health Monk - a site dedicated to helping ambitious professionals lose weight and feel awesome by changing tiny habits.

Most of the health and weight loss advice is the exact same, even from respectable people. Here's my unique diet, blah blah blah. Here are my unique supplements, blah blah blah.

Alex’s entire process is based on addressing success at the origin: our habits, our personality, our character, regardless of what diet you're on. Many people have realized that the diet can constantly change, but unless WE change, nothing happens.

Alex and I discuss:

- The daily success habits of people that lost 100+ pounds in a healthy way and kept it off

- The myth of discipline and willpower: how tiny habits win every time

- Success habits of olympians, writers, and even the creator of the rolls royce - how they bypassed traditional thinking of "I need to be more disciplined"

I thought I liked Beyonce before last week, and then there was LEMONADE…

And I realized I didn’t like her, I LOVED her. It was pure creative and business genius all wrapped into one.

When my friend messaged me on Friday afternoon with an invite to the sold out Beyonce show that night I said “ummm, is Beyonce the Queen?! DUH.”

So, when I thought I couldn’t love Beyonce anymore, she won me over with her Formation Tour performance. As her signature bodysuits got smaller and smaller throughout the night, my love grew bigger and when I thought I was pretty happy with who I am, I suddenly just wanted to be Beyonce.

But all that aside, I couldn’t stop thinking about the well thought out marketing and business genius that Queen Bey has been slaying.

As an entrepreneur and business strategist, my mind is always swirling and assessing what other businesses and industries are doing to stand out, and Bey is pretty much unstoppable right now.

So, let’s break some of this down into 5 ways you can slay like Bey {in business}:

  1. Do the work. As Rihanna would say, she works works works works works - the girl is a DIVE, the female version of a hustler, and she says it herself. We’ve all seen the meme - you have the same number of hours in the day as Beyonce - and she’s seriously impressive. I mean, I was exhausted from just WATCHING her concert, and to think she got up and did it all again the next day...and will do that for the next few months, is not human. The girl knows how to DO THE WORK. I mean, she literally said she grinds till she owns it. Do you? And doing the work doesn’t mean being miserable...Beyonce clearly LOVES doing the work. When you have a career that lights you up, you are thankful that you get to do the work each and everyday! This goes for you too, if you want to be the Queen, do the work!
  1. Tell a story. Have you seen LEMONADE? If not, run here now. She's a storytelling genius and everything is well thought out and interconnected - each song is its own story, but then she strings them together to tell an even bigger one. Regardless of this is autobiographical or just incredible art, we’re invested and we can feel the emotional connection when people tell stories. We feel like we know her and that she knows us because of her ability to pull us into the entire story, it’s not just a song anymore. Start telling a story through your work and create an emotional connection with your audience.
  1. Create a language. She's got her own language {the beehive, slay, bootylicious, etc.} and it makes you feel like you’re part of her community -- because you are. Creating names and a language of your own helps people not only feel connected to you, but to each other as well. It’s like they all have Beyonce in common and it unites! Unite your people with a common language!
  1. Confidence. The girl knows she's flawless, I mean, she woke up like this too. Her body is so bootylicious and she knows it. That all might seem a little cocky to say out loud {go ahead and try it about yourself}, but the truth is if you’re going to run a business, or create any insane level of success, you’ve got to be your own biggest fan. I encourage you to wake up every day and let yourself know that you are flawless, and you too woke up like this.
  1. Be controversial, have a message. Beyonce is clearly NOT afraid to be controversial {well, maybe she’s afraid, but she’s doing it anyway}. She is currently causing lots of commotion by saying what she really thinks and she’s on the edge of creating a REVOLUTION. Revolutions don’t happen because people were quiet with their opinions. Saying what you truly think will polarize people. It will cause people to hate her, but her true fans will love her even more.

This is exactly what you need to do in your business, no more vanilla, Queen Bey needs you to pony up and start your own revolution, because nothing will ever change in this world if we’re all afraid to say something different.

Regardless if you agree with Beyonce’s current message, you have to admit, it’s brave and courageous of her to say what she really thinks, take a page from her book and be revolutionary with your message!

And based on what I saw at the concert, her fans are more fanatical than ever...there were literally humans SOBBING behind me before the show when they thought they saw her HAIR on stage left. The thought of seeing her hair brought them to tears.

I could go on and on about all the ways Beyonce is slaying like a queen right now in business, but if you take these 5 ways and start channeling this hustler a little more often, you’ll be way ahead of the game.
