7 Brief Lessons on Money 

  1. It doesn’t matter how much you make if you don’t know how to manage it properly. I’ve know people who make multi-six figures and are in multi six figures of debt - and I know teachers making 30K a year and have a fully funded emergency fund, no debt, and are investing in retirement. Take personal responsibility for managing your money.
  2. If you can’t afford to give right now, be honest. If you’re working through debt or struggling to pay your basic bills regularly, focus on getting your own financial house in order before you start donating extra money to someone else’s. A giving heart is great, but only if you’re not giving away your future (or your kids’ future) in the process. The next time you’re asked to hand over unbudgeted dollars, take some time to figure out what you can afford then give if—and only if—it works with your budget.
  3. Money doesn’t change people - it’s who they always were. But money doesn’t have manners. Money is just money.  
  4. Don’t resent your bills - be grateful for them. Why resent paying your bills? If you use it, you pay for it. That’s empowering. And the fact that you have the money to pay your bills is always something to be grateful for.
  5. Be legal, pay your taxes. Certainly leverage the system, but don't get "creative." Just keep it legal.
  6. More on taxes…don’t stay in debt or retrain your earning for tax breaks. If you’re holding onto debt or restraining your earning potential because you think that making more or paying it off will mean higher taxes, then stop that. Most of the time that logic is nonsensical.
  7. Understand where you’re money is going - and make sure you’re being intentional and getting the best deal, but know that *most* of the time money is never WASTED. Don't view money as being wasted. Money is never wasted - I try not to think of money as ever being wasted.

Whenever I am faced with a fear or a decision, I play this question game with myself. Let me explain by just playing it here with you...

I ask myself 4 questions before making a decision to make sure I'm not acting (or not acting) out of fear or focusing on the wrong thing. Here they go:

1. What's the WORST that could happen? 

2. Am I going to DIE by doing this thing?

3. What's the BEST that could happen? 

4. Is doing this thing aligned with my goals or the results I want to create? 

 

Most of the time, the WORST that happens isn't really so bad. 

Most of the time, I am NOT going to die by taking action. 

Most of the time, the BEST is really mind-glowingly awesome. 

And IF I can say YES to question #4, then it's a no-brainer decision.

I had a big article published by Business Insider about my debt freedom journey and my top 5 pieces of advice for paying down debt. 

This is a story that gets the attraction of a lot of HATERS. People don't believe in themselves enough to believe what I did is possible, so instead, they troll on me. Which is totally fine, because the reason for sharing my story isn't about me - it's about inspiring at least one person to know that they are meant for bigger and better things. 

I want people to know that their highest goals are alive and real within them, and with a bit of tenacity, they can achieve them all. 

Along with all those haters, was over 179,000 eyeballs on my story, and even a few supportive and inspired comments, and even a personal email from one person who is ready to get out of their own debt and now believes they can. 

So, why am I telling you all this, right? 

I wasn't always sure that sharing my debt freedom story was a good idea. I knew that people wouldn't believe it, I never wanted it to feel like bragging or snobbery, and have honestly never loved being the center of attention. 

BUT, when I asked myself those 4 questions about this decision to share my story publicly and many other decisions in my business - the answer was an astounding - you have to share this to INSPIRE other people. So, that other people will believe it's possible for them too, no matter what their finances look like.

The same thing is true when I talk about what's working (and not working) in my business. 

I want to share those things with you. But I want to make sure that I'm sharing with a purpose, aligned to my goals & mission, sharing to inspire you and give you real tangible tips (just like I did in the Business Insider article) so that you can create more impact in your own life & business. 

Use those questions as your filter for moving through fear!

Work expands to fill the time available for its completion. If you’re into productivity, you’ll know this proverb as Parkinson’s Law. This interesting statement was made by Cyril Northcote Parkinson, the famous British historian and author, in 1955.

Parkinson’s Law – work expands to fill the time available for its completion – means that if you give yourself a week to complete a two hour task, then (psychologically speaking) the task will increase in complexity and become more daunting so as to fill that week.

It may not even fill the extra time with more work, but just stress and tension about having to get it done. By assigning the right amount of time to a task, we gain back more time and the task will reduce in complexity to its natural state.

Parkinson’s Law is an observation, not some voodoo magic. It works because people give tasks longer than they really need. 

 

Here are some tips to help you use Parkinson's Law to your advantage since we know how it works now: 

  • Work without your computer charger. 
  • Use the Pomodoro technique.
  • Restrict your time artificially by moving  your location throughout the day. Create a task list to get done at each spot.
  • Make a rule to do XYZ before 9am. Get it done early and then let yourself have some freedom.
  • Get an accountability partner who will force you to pay up, literally, if you work past a certain time or take too long to do something - create a financial consequence. 
  • Set a hard deadline.
  • Cut your deadlines in half. 
  • Limit tasks like responding to email to thirty minutes a day - set a timer.

Becky Straw is the Co-Founder and Chief Adventurist for The Adventure Project, a new nonprofit “adding venture” capital to support entrepreneurs in developing countries. Her and her co-founder were inspired by a passion to revolutionize giving, and create a movement to marry good intentions with measurable impact. Becky was 29-years-old when they launched.

In their first four years, The Adventure Project has engaged 6,000 Americans to help create 894 jobs in India, Kenya, Uganda and Haiti. Those entrepreneurs will go on to serve over one million people to better health care, food and water. Their goal is to create one million jobs in the next ten years. 

Prior to The Adventure Project, Becky spent three years helping to launch the nonprofit, charity: water and graduated from Columbia University with a Master’s in International Social Welfare. Your business is an extension of you, so while it IS separate, there will always be some ways that you're reflected in it.

It will always reflect your strengths and weaknesses. 

It will always reflect your personality. 

And most importantly, your business will always reflect your personal core values. 

They are the foundation and framework that your business is built on.

 

When you intentionally develop your core values, they increase your speed for decision making, help you avoid costly mistakes, reduce stress, and allow you to stay true to yourself and your customers.

The business will always reflect what you care about. So what are your core values? 

Here are a few of mine as an example:

✔️ Authenticity: I always want my community to know I am being real with them. This means I don't only share the good stuff, I share it all. I want them to have the whole story and see even the ugly parts of my business and my life. 

✔️ Relatability: I always want people to connect with my message and say “Oh wow, me too!” I want them to feel like we are in this together in our struggles and experiences. 

✔️ Humor: I’ve got a naturally sarcastic and playful sense of humor in my everyday life. I want to use this to entertain and engage people and also lighten the mood so that they can hear the hard truth sometimes. 

I always tell my clients we need to lighten up and have some fun because believe it or not, we're not creating oxygen. 

✔️ Approachability: Regardless of how big my network and community eventually becomes, I always want to be approachable, this is one reason I have my dog in my branding, that's part of who I am and I know it makes me look and feel more approachable. 

✔️ Generosity: I am a giver to the core and my business is no exception. I want generosity to shine through everything I do, and I also want to influence others to be generous as well. With our time, money and energy. 

I have a few more that I won't go into major detail on, but they are things like: integrity, personal responsibility, challenge, encouragement, etc.

By being clear on my core values, I can make decisions for my business and for the future that align with these (and other) values. 

Even as my life changes and my business evolves, knowing my core values for my business allows me to stay true to myself.

Most business owners know that in order to be successful, they’ve got to set goals.  But despite this, many business owners don’t actually do it.

Of the business owners that do set them, just like New Year’s resolutions, most don’t follow through.

There’s a whole load of reasons why you don't achieve your goals, typically they are excuses.

 

When you set big goals, many people feel a sense of overwhelm. Rather like standing at the bottom of a huge mountain, the size of the goal before you, just like the mountain, appears to be enormous.

Instead, let's use 90 day goals to eat the elephant one bite at a time. 

 

If you break a task or goal into smaller chunks, it’s a lot easier to achieve.

Consequently, the most successful way for you to achieve a big goal is rather than creating a plan to tackle your goals for the year, is instead to focus on your goals for the next 90 days.

So, having a goal for the year is great, but being really clear what you’re going to achieve in the next 90 days towards that big goal, makes it much more likely that you’ll achieve it.

What’s more, having a smaller goal over a shorter period makes it much easier to get everybody to move forward at the same time.

Why 90 Day Goals Are Better Than Year Long Ones:

- 90 Day’s isn’t too long

- 90 Day’s isn’t too short either

- Parkinsons Law - work expands to fill the time available for its completion means that if you give yourself a week to complete a two hour task. 

- Helps motivate you - you're more likely to stay motivated when you have WINS

- You can reset them quickly

- You aren’t tempted to spread yourself too thinly by trying to achieve too much
