Nic Screws is a New York-based fashion editor, stylist & consultant. She is currently the style director at Bloomberg Media.

Her 12-year-long career in the magazine industry started in the editorial department at Men’s Health, where her unintentional foray into fashion also began. From there, Nic went on to help launch Rodale’s high-end men’s lifestyle magazine Best Life. Jobs at Lucky & Travel + Leisure followed, books & experiences she credits with giving her a fashion education.

In the spring of 2008 she joined Esquire as fashion market editor, a role that involved covering the menswear market, representing the brand at the seasonal fashion collections & helping to conceptualize the monthly style editorial content. She rose to the position of senior fashion market editor, spending 4 years producing and styling the monthly front-of-book style section. Beyond print, Nic also contributed greatly to Esquire’s growing online presence—lending her female perspective on men’s fashion in online features such as shopping & styling guides.

She left the venerable brand after 6 year to accept the position as the first-ever style director at Bloomberg Media, a position she has held since August 2014.

Nic’s long tenure at Esquire, and directorship at Bloomberg, has made her a sought after menswear expert. She has been quoted in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, USA Today, ABC Radio and the Daily News, among others.

In addition to her work at Bloomberg, Nic regularly styles & consults for clients such as P&G Prestige, Dockers, J Brand, and members of the NFL and NHL, all who call upon her editorial eye to help elevate their brand & image. Among the list of professional athletes she has styled: Russell Westbrook, Tom Brady, Henrik Lundqvist, Dwayne Wade and Victor Cruz.

Nic is a graduate of the University of Florida where she earned a bachelor of science degree in magazine journalism in 2003. In the spring of 2013, she returned to her alma mater (albeit remotely) as an adjunct professor, teaching a course entitled fashion writing & journalism.

She lives in Brooklyn with her husband Mark and their goldendoodle, Hudson.

Everyone has fear. I don’t care who you are or where you've come from.

Let me break down the most common things people are afraid of:

1. Fear of failure

2. Fear of success

3. Fear of other people’s opinions - their judgements, their criticism, their words, their opposition

4. Fear of change or the unknown

5. Fear of feeling your negative or uncomfortable feelings

6. Fear of confrontation and awkward conversations

Here’s the thing that ALL of these fears have in common in order to overcome: They require action. BIG ACTION!

All the people that are killing it out there in their careers, in their relationships, with their goals and dreams, their only secret is that they got up and did something about it.

The One Your Feed Parable:

An old grandfather told his grandson: “My son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, and resentment. The other is good. It is joy, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, and bravery.”

The boy thought about it, and asked, “Grandfather, which wolf wins?”

The old man quietly replied, The one you feed.”

It takes conscious, constant and creative effort to make a life worth living. This podcast is about how other people keep themselves moving in the right direction – how they feed their good wolf.

What do you suck at?

Back in 2012 or something ancient like that, Danielle LaPorte wrote her own post listing what she sucks at. She says that by listing your shortcomings, you give yourself permission to pursue your genius.

So many of us women try to be the best at everything. But, many times we just naturally suck at it, and/or loathe it all together. Let’s let go of the shame, guilt and embarrasment. Stop apologizing for it once and for all.

So, it’s my turn to list some things I absolutely suck at. Here they are:

I suck at my inbox.

I suck at asking for help.

I suck at JUST watching tv. I do 10 million things while I watch.

I’m suck at sucking up.

I such at checking voicemail and answering my phone.

I suck at slowing down.

I suck at having compassion for people who have excuses.

I suck at house cleaning.

I suck at keeping in touch.

The point of this exercise is to notice where you have tension around being lame at something. The things on your “I suck at…” list are the things that have bothered you frequently or deeply for a long time. You have fought against them, felt less than because of them, and tried to cover up for them. No more of that!

So, what do you suck at?

Emailing ain't always easy!

Sort of a love/hate relationship in my opinion.

But the truth is, emailing your list is THE BEST way to consistently connect with your people.

And if you want to sell them something, it's essential.

But what to say? How to say it? And how to do it without flat out ANNOYING them...that's the key.

Every email during your launch needs a purpose - and you really do want to send as many as possible (without them hitting unsubscribe of course).

I've laid out 9 different emails you need to send to your list during a launch - and each has a real purpose! (plus examples from my own launch).

We're covering 4 of them on today's episode, and you can get the rest here: www.adriennedorison.com/9emails

7 Brief Lessons on Money

  1. It doesn’t matter how much you make if you don’t know how to manage it properly. I’ve know people who make multi-six figures and are in multi six figures of debt - and I know teachers making 30K a year and have a fully funded emergency fund, no debt, and are investing in retirement. Take personal responsibility for managing your money.
  2. If you can’t afford to give right now, be honest. If you’re working through debt or struggling to pay your basic bills regularly, focus on getting your own financial house in order before you start donating extra money to someone else’s. A giving heart is great, but only if you’re not giving away your future (or your kids’ future) in the process. The next time you’re asked to hand over unbudgeted dollars, take some time to figure out what you can afford then give if—and only if—it works with your budget.
  3. Money doesn’t change people - it’s who they always were. But money doesn’t have manners. Money is just money.
  4. Don’t resent your bills - be grateful for them. Why resent paying your bills? If you use it, you pay for it. That’s empowering. And the fact that you have the money to pay your bills is always something to be grateful for.
  5. Be legal, pay your taxes. Certainly leverage the system, but don't get "creative." Just keep it legal.
  6. More on taxes…don’t stay in debt or retrain your earning for tax breaks. If you’re holding onto debt or restraining your earning potential because you think that making more or paying it off will mean higher taxes, then stop that. Most of the time that logic is nonsensical.
  7. Understand where you’re money is going - and make sure you’re being intentional and getting the best deal, but know that *most* of the time money is never WASTED. Don't view money as being wasted. Money is never wasted - I try not to think of money as ever being wasted.

Whenever I am faced with a fear or a decision, I play this question game with myself. Let me explain by just playing it here with you...

I ask myself 4 questions before making a decision to make sure I'm not acting (or not acting) out of fear or focusing on the wrong thing. Here they go:

1. What's the WORST that could happen?

2. Am I going to DIE by doing this thing?

3. What's the BEST that could happen?

4. Is doing this thing aligned with my goals or the results I want to create?

Most of the time, the WORST that happens isn't really so bad.

Most of the time, I am NOT going to die by taking action.

Most of the time, the BEST is really mind-glowingly awesome.

And IF I can say YES to question #4, then it's a no-brainer decision.

Visualizing Your Success episode

I had a big article published by Business Insider about my debt freedom journey and my top 5 pieces of advice for paying down debt.

This is a story that gets the attraction of a lot of HATERS. People don't believe in themselves enough to believe what I did is possible, so instead, they troll on me. Which is totally fine, because the reason for sharing my story isn't about me - it's about inspiring at least one person to know that they are meant for bigger and better things.

I want people to know that their highest goals are alive and real within them, and with a bit of tenacity, they can achieve them all.

Along with all those haters, was over 179,000 eyeballs on my story, and even a few supportive and inspired comments, and even a personal email from one person who is ready to get out of their own debt and now believes they can.

So, why am I telling you all this, right?

I wasn't always sure that sharing my debt freedom story was a good idea. I knew that people wouldn't believe it, I never wanted it to feel like bragging or snobbery, and have honestly never loved being the center of attention.

BUT, when I asked myself those 4 questions about this decision to share my story publicly and many other decisions in my business - the answer was an astounding - you have to share this to INSPIRE other people. So, that other people will believe it's possible for them too, no matter what their finances look like.

The same thing is true when I talk about what's working (and not working) in my business.

I want to share those things with you. But I want to make sure that I'm sharing with a purpose, aligned to my goals & mission, sharing to inspire you and give you real tangible tips (just like I did in the Business Insider article) so that you can create more impact in your own life & business.

Use those questions as your filter for moving through fear!
